ABSTRACT

A case of severe epistaxis due to hypertension and arteriosclerosis is reported. After usual methods have failed to stop the bleeding, we embolized, superselectively, the ipsilateral internal maxillary artery by transfemoral catheter. Although epistaxis ceased after embolization but cerebral infarction, hemiplegia and deep coma developed and patient died on the 9th post op. day. Superselective embolization of branches of the external carotid artery in treating severe epistaxis should be used cautiously in patients with aretrisclerosis

ABSTRACT

Immunohistochemical investigation were carried out to determine the distribution and significance of IAP in the tissues of malignant tumours of the head and neck by using anti-IAP monclonal antibody and ABC immunoperoxidase histochemical assay. Fifty five specimens of malignant tumours and 24 of benign lesions of head and neck were included in this study. The results revealed that IAP was negative in benign lesions while the positive rate was 94.55% in malignant tumours. The positive rate rises with the development of the pathological grade of squamous cell carcinoma. IAP may be a valuable tumour-marker in the early diagnosis evaluation of treatment, prognosis, recurrence and staging of the head and neck carcinoma

ABSTRACT

We report the histological and histochemical changes of the respiratory mucosa of the guinea pigs nasal cavity after nasal instillation by decongestant 0.05% Naphazoline Hydrochloride drops under conditions of feeding of normal diet and by adding additional quantities of vitamin C and B[2]. The results revealed that the nasal instillation by 0.05% Naphazoline can provoke a series of histological and histochemical changes in the respiratory mucosa of guinea pigs nasal cavities, but all these changes can be reduced significantly by increasing the supply of vitamin C and B[2] in the feeding of the animals

ABSTRACT

In order to assess the diagnostic value of total serum IgE [S-IgE] and nasal excretion IgE [N-IgE] in Nasal Allergy [NA], we examined 26 patients and 20 controls by BA-ELISA method. The results revealed the values of both S-IgE to be significantly higher in patients than in controls [p<0.05]. But there were no significant relationship between the number of eosinphils in nasal excretion and the value of both IgEs. We confirm that determinations of the above two indices are definitely useful in the diagnosis of NA

ABSTRACT

In order to elucidate the degree of damage in 3 kinds of commonly encountered chronic rhinitis [simple, allergic and atrophic] patients, we continued our search with the method described earlier. The NMTR of 3 kinds of patients were 2.57 +/- 2.49mm/min, 1.67 +/- 1.63 and 1.33 +/- 1.49 respectively. All patients demonstrated reduction in rate, especially the atrophic rhinitis

ABSTRACT

Ceruminous gland tumours are very rare glandular tumours of the external auditory meatus. We have dealt with 7 cases in past 10 years. It occurs mainly in middle aged persons. About 60% are adenoid cystic carcinomas. The treatment consists of local extensive excision and postoperative radiotherapy. All of the 4 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma are still alive after a postoperative follow-up period of 17 months to 9 years

ABSTRACT

Six cases of antral hemangioma were treated satisfactorily by 1000-3000 rads preoperative radiation followed 1-3 months later by excision through Caldwell-Luc approach. The quantity of blood-loss during operation was markedly reduced than by primary surgical resection only

ABSTRACT

Effective drug therapy in Atrophic Rhinitis is not ideal and surgical treatment is often needed. Among different operations closure of the nostril is the simplest and the best. Since 1981, 34 operations in 32 cases [2 cases with bilateral operations] were done. The percentage of effectiveness is 95.5% with a follow-up period from 2-52 month

ABSTRACT

In order to assess the diagnostic value of Beta-2 Microglobulin, we marked p beta -m and assessed its presence by radioimmunoassay method in 30 benign and 30 malignant ENT tumours. The results of these two groups were 2.03 +/- 0.03 micro g/ml and 1.77 +/- 0.06 micro g/ml respectively. The latter was significantly different from the former and the normal controls [2.02+0.67ug/ml] [p<0.01]. We agree that although it is not specific as a tumour marker, it can still furnish some relevant informations in the diagnosis and follow-up in malignant tumour patients

ABSTRACT

Tympanometry was performed in a series of 50 cases of nasal surgery where nasal packing was used to observe the changes in the middle ear and barometric equilibrium function of the Eustachian tube. Post-operatiuely 46% of the patients showed a temporary Type C Tympanogram which recoverd to normal within one week after packing has been removed. In unilateral nasal packing this effect was noticed in 21.4% and in bilateral nasal packing in 55.6% of the patients

ABSTRACT

The measurement of the nasal mucociliary transportation rate [MTR] is useful not only in the fundamental research but also in clinical evaluation of the patients as well .We have used the radioisotope 113m In-DTPA as the tracer combined with gamma scintigraphy in measuring this rate in 40 healthy aged persons. The mean value is 3.47mm/min. It is significantly slower than that of the adults and youths [5.71mm/min] [p<0.01]

ABSTRACT

A new method, 113m In-DTPA [Diethylenetriaminopentoacetic acid] combined with gamma photography was used to measure human nasal mucociliary transportation rate in normal subjects under standard conditions. The mean value of mucociliary transportation rate was 5.7-/+2.98 mm/min. In these subjects there was significant difference between persons 35 years of age and below to 36 years of age and above. No statistical difference was noted between males and females. The rate of flow can be divided into four groups of slow, medium, fast and extra fast clearance rates. Four modes of cilia tranportation are also noted and described
